What Can’t Go in a Dumpster? A Guide for Capital Region New York Homeowners

If you’re planning a home renovation, cleanout, or landscaping project in the Capital Region, renting a roll-off dumpster is one of the easiest ways to manage your debris. But before you start tossing everything in, it’s important to know that not everything is allowed in a dumpster — and putting the wrong items in can result in extra fees or even a rejected haul.

Here’s a straightforward guide to what you can and can’t throw in a dumpster when renting in Albany, Schenectady, Troy, and the surrounding Capital Region.

What You CAN Throw in a Dumpster

Most everyday renovation and cleanout materials are perfectly fine:

• Household junk and furniture

• Clothing and general clutter

• Wood, drywall, and flooring

• Roofing shingles

• Yard waste (branches, dirt, sod)

• Concrete and brick (check with your provider on weight limits)

• Appliances like stoves and washers (without freon)

What You CANNOT Put in a Dumpster

These items are prohibited due to state regulations, environmental laws, or safety concerns:

Hazardous Materials

• Paint (liquid), solvents, and thinners

• Motor oil, gasoline, and other fuels

• Pesticides and herbicides

• Cleaning chemicals and pool chemicals

Electronics & Batteries

• Lithium-ion batteries (laptops, power tools, e-bikes, phones)

• Car batteries and other lead-acid batteries

Medical & Biological Waste

• Needles or sharps

• Any medical waste or biohazardous material

Other Prohibited Items

• Tires

• Asbestos-containing materials

• Propane tanks or any pressurized cylinders

A Note on Tires and Mattresses

While tires and mattresses are not accepted in standard dumpster loads, we can make arrangements to accept them for an additional fee. Contact us ahead of time so we can plan accordingly.

New York State Rules You Should Know

New York has strict environmental regulations around waste disposal. E-waste like TVs and computers cannot legally go in landfills — they must be recycled. Many Capital Region municipalities offer free e-waste drop-off events throughout the year. For hazardous household waste, Albany County holds periodic HHW collection days where you can safely dispose of paint, chemicals, and more.

What Happens If You Put Prohibited Items In?

If a prohibited item is found in your dumpster, the rental company may charge an additional disposal fee, remove the item and leave it at your property, or in some cases refuse to haul the dumpster entirely. It’s always best to ask your rental provider upfront if you’re unsure about a specific item.
